Main Square, Ourense

The main square is the meeting point in the city, the heart of the historic quarter. With an irregular shape and the peculiarity of being one of the few major squares in Europe with a slightly sloping floor.



The Plaza Mayor houses some of the main monuments of the city. Centering the space is the façade of the Town Hall, the work of Queralt, which occupies the only side without arcades. Next to it is the Old Episcopal Palace, with which it seems to compete in majesty.
The other three sides are the arcades that form the Espolón, a former promenade for the nobility, now converted into one of the liveliest terrace areas in the centre. Above it, beautiful facades of noble houses.
Numerous festive activities are held in the square throughout the year, as well as other types of activities, such as the second-hand market and antiques market that takes place every first Sunday of the month.
It is currently a meeting point for many of the visitors to the thermal areas given that the tourist train that makes the journey has its departure in this square.
